Sunday Music: Breezin'

Title track off George Benson's 1976 triple-platinum and number 1 album for pop, R and B, and jazz that year.

Too mellow? Something with a funkier beat from his next live album:

I loved Breezin' and bought it when it came out. Probably the only guy in the dorm who had it (hey, it was Maine in the '70s) but I was into jazz at the time. Chuck Mangione, Spyrogyra, etc. Jazz that was fun.

Of course, there was all sorts of jazz that was no fun (atonal, amelodic) but didn't listen to that.

And Doobie Brothers. Loved them. Ah, the '70s ....

More memories. I was in High School working at the local radio station at the time. Small town Iowa county seat, so "middle of the road" was the order of the day, except after 8 PM when we could sneak in some non-Top 40 Stones, Who, etc.

6-9PM was "Dinner Date" which was instrumentals with folks like Percy Faith being featured artists. I think that Breezin was the most modern piece I was ever able to sneak in. (The Program Director got on my case when I tried to slide in some Mike Post singles)

Among the HS Kid DJs, our standing joke when we played Benson's On Broadway when it charted was that it was the "number one hit on Radio Free Europe" based on this old commercial we all remembered watching:

I prefer the second. Both are good.
