Sunday Music: Son Of A Preacher Man

Born Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, "Dusty Springfield" spent her entire musical career as the very dictionary definition of "blue eyed soul", being the most southern woman to come out of London since Vivien Leigh, and the blackest white Irish girl to cut an album anywhere. This cut, from Dusty In Memphis, made it only to #10 in the US and UK at the time, but has since been included on every list of the greatest singles of all time, and rocked it just as hard in the soundtrack for Pulp Fiction in 1994 as it did brand new in 1969. Dusty was eventually awarded the Order of the British Empire, and described after her death as arguably one of the greatest singers from the UK of the 20th century, but songs like this will keep her alive for and inspire generations yet to come.

Yes, she may be British, but she sounds like she grew up in New Orleans, she had it, definitely...

My sister put that on a birthday CD for me years ago. I'm not one to pay much attention to artists, so without this blog post, I might've never known the singer's name, much less that she was white. My jaw absolutely dropped...
