If we were attacking Moscow or St. Petersburg, and they were defending, I'd likely agree.
But sending them to take Ukraine for Vlad's fever dreams? Not so much.

The most likely suspects are the CIA/USN/Poland. The Poles want their new gas pipeline from Norway to Poland to be a sole source.

Most units like these are modular, so it's not a big deal to add a meter or so containing an explosive stage in the middle.
If the POTUS ordered the USN to blow up the NS1 & 2, IMHO, this is how it could have been done.
If this happened, quite a few USN personnel know about it. I'd love to read their NDAs. They will probably all be transferred to separate "Ice Station Zebras" where they will not be available for testimony.

Some of those men could be big trouble for Ukraine. as there are likely veterans from the Soviet's war in Afghanistan. Experienced, and already experts at losing an unwinnable war. A smart Russian commander shouldn't go to sleep with these men nearby.
I'm thinking most of them will be mustered to garrison duties in outposts, and rotate the troops there out? That way those troops (with fresher training) would be more useful. I do note that none of them have panzerfausts . . . yet.
