Sunday Music: Say Goodbye To Hollywood

Billy Joel hid out in L.A. playing piano at the Executive Lounge on Wilshire in the early '70s, which gave him his signature hit "Piano Man". When he'd sorted out his problems with the record company that totally screwed up mastering his initial album (on which he sounded like a chipmunk, with the instruments sounding normal), he wrote this tune to commemorate returning home to NY, and first released it on Turnstiles in '76.

"My Life" was the first one of his songs I remember hearing . . .

I liked a lot of his early work, and had a couple of vinyl LPs, too. My Life, Big Shot, Piano Man, you know.

I heard within the last few days that he said he's moving to Florida. I always thought of Billy Joel as Mister NYFC. As in died in the wool, ain't no place better in the universe.

He'll probably move to one of our blue counties, where he'll fit in better than here in the smaller cities.

@SiGraybeard,

As much as I have fond memories of visiting NYC, the tax man flattens such joy like another round of Covid. If Joel is moving to Florida, its to enjoy the benefit of no state income tax.
