Flick Pick: The Mask

The Mask
(New Line, 1994)

One of three films that put Jim Carrey over the top, took screwball comedy to new levels, and introduced the world to Cameron Diaz as an instant starlet. The effects were enough to get an Oscar nomination, Carrey's comedic sense was the equal of the effects, the retro soundtrack was marvelous, and the box office was unbelievable. The film is a cult classic as well as children's favorite, not least of which because it has more in common with Looney Tunes and Tom & Jerry than it does with pure adult drama. It works in no small part because everyone in the movie, including Carrey himself as Stanley Ipkiss, plays straight-man to the lead character throughout the movie, all of them to perfection.
