Among the greatest character intros in film history.
Poitier already had an Oscar; Steiger earned his for this role.
Sidney Poitier, one of the most monumentally talented film actors of all time, and winner of multiple awards and honors (from back when they meant something), dead at 94, of natural causes, at his home in the Bahamas. Not a bad life for a kid from Miami, from when drinking fountains were still labeled "White" and "Colored".

"Lillies of the Field" is an all-time favorite. Filmed in glorious black-and-white.
Boat Guy
Decent actor , asshole in real life . My opinion.
Noah Dearborn was one of his unsung great ones, IMO.
I hadn't actually seen "In the Heat of the Night" all the way through until last year. Great movie, great acting from Mr. Poitier.
"They Call me MISTER TIBBS!"
I liked that movie a lot
Shame Mr. Portier turned into a leftist twat.
Not many of the quality older actors left. He was a very talented man.
He was born in the US, but grew up in the Caribbean. I heard him say in an interview that it was growing up there that gave him more confidence. I am sure growing up in the segregated South had some effect on young blacks.
I loved A Patch of Blue.
He was a gifted actor. That will live on. God will judge him as he will judge us all, with perfect knowledge of our sins and wins, private and public.
What are the odds he had had the "booster" injection in the past week or so?
Great movie, great performances by many. Takes place in Sparta Mississippi, but it was filmed in Sparta Illinois about 15 miles from where I was born in 1967.
Watching that clip Aesop posted makes me want to re-watch the film, and then pay attention the next time I am in Sparta to see how it changed from then to now.
@Marty,
Pretty slim. Have you seen how he looked the last few years? Pretty frail, as befits his age. At 94, Death isn't an unwelcome visitor, it's a comforting friend telling you to rest at last.
I really liked him in his role as the mature voice of reason in Sneakers.
Off topic Aesop but is Cold Fury and Busted Nuckles having a Denial of Service attack the past couple of days?
Seems since they started posting about those nitwits threatening them issues with their sites?
Odd that Intrepid Reporter is doing the same postings but no DOS problems yet?
I was born (1944) and raised in Miami. We had a maid who had been married Sidney Poitier's cousin. Minnie Poitier.
