My son,USN flying with the golden swordsmen in the new p8a Poseidon was forward deployed to Okinawa, got to visit iwo last summer(not allowed by just anyone I was told). He said there still are live rounds, helmets, all manner of war relics still all over the ground. They were told not to touch any relic but were allowed to gather some black sand and a small volcanic rock, then hiked up to the placard placed on that historic spot on mount Suribachi and took a picture of the rock on the monument and then gifted me that picture and rock and sand in a jar on his last home visit. Damn kid made me cry...I raised him right.
I knew a 99 yr old WW2 ARMY vet who fought in the Pacific. He hated Marines, why? He landed and fought on Islands, suffered huge losses. After securing an island and runway. plane load of Marines would land, take photos, and fly away. Only to find out the Marines got credit for the Island. we are talking a guy with 2 purple hearts and bronze star. question everything.
Ya, well my dad was regular army. Went to establish bases on those islands that were captured. When I said I was thinking about joining the Marines. He said no way. He said he watch those boys get mercilessly murdered by upper command. Said if I want to be target practice. I could play the moving target next trip to the range. I can't say Semper Fi. But I can still honor those that can. Good Job Marines!
Tarawa atoll 1000000 men will not take Tarawa in 1000 years. You can tell it to the army you can tell it to the navy and you can tell it to the marines. Can't tell marines anything.
I spent an afternoon on the beach just below Suribachi one summer toward the end of a WestPac. The sand was so hot we had to keep going into the surf. If those brave guys got any kind of a huss, maybe it was slightly cooler in February. Semper Fi, aye Boat Guy
Not counting the news outlets or websites along the full range of accuracy and veracity, I follow multiple actual individuals' handwritten blogs. (Bot news aggregators don't thrill me.) Looking them over, many are current serving or former military and a couple are some variation of high-speed low-drag elite forces ninjas. Or just funny as all. Because life without humor is just despair. So in other words, the same folks I trusted in the military not to wet the bed, sh*t themselves, or otherwise run around like headless Nancys, are the same folks I trust on the interwebz, for demonstrating pretty much the same trustworthiness and circumspectly responsible behavior. Color me shocked.

I've got some friends that are Marines. I was Army Airborne. I razz them a little bit. But I torment my air farce friends mercilessly...

1) That's absolute bullshit.
2) You fell for it.
Think about that.
And maybe question everything.
Starting with sumdood's WWII fairytales.

Yeah.
Especially after they took Tarawa, top to bottom, in 72 hours.
The Army was nowhere around then either.
Chesty Gave Zero F--ks.
