Ice Station Zebra
(MGM, 1968)
Reportedly one of Howard Hughes' favorite movies in his sunset years, and definitely one of mine anytime. One of a number of adaptations of great Alistair MacLean's novels into movies, and a superb bookend for his Guns Of Navaronne, this is great cold war spy/thriller. Directed by John Sturges, it's the utter antithesis of a chick flick: there's not a single woman in anywhere in the story or cast. The lack goes unnoticed in such a movie as this. I would advise anyone to watch it, if only to have something to compare it to when Warner Bros. undertakes what will likely be a totally botched remake, now somewhere in development.
