Look, I get that restaurants washing out coffee mugs isn't a new thing, but that's actual restaurants. With adult supervision. Expecting minimum-wage twenty-something barristas who can barely get a coffee order right any 3 times out of 10 to run dishwashers is the point where this whole thing jumped the shark.
If they were anything close to smart, they'd just say "Bring your own mug", they'd dump a pre-measured amount of burnt coffee into it, and call it even. But they won't do that, because they don't trust their own idiots not to drop and break the mug. But you're supposed to trust them to clean and sanitize them.

These are the same people who, where I live, anyway, had out their reusable Christmas cups in Nov 2021 and due to COVID, refused to put your coffee in the reusable cup. Mind you, this was your reusable cup, specifically for you, and brand new at that (store was closed, drive thru was not, so there wasn't exactly an issue with every weirdo who walked in the store running their fingers over the mouthpiece of the cup), but they gave you the reusable one and your coffee in a disposable one.

TBF, everywhere around the country for a while during covid, wouldn't allow you to use your personal coffee cup at the coffee urn. You had to buy it in one of their Styrofoam cups and dump it yourself after you got out of the store. That's every convenience store in the country, not just the company famous for burnt coffee and bad service.

My youngest worked for Starbucks. They do better than minimum wage, have decent benefits, and treat their people OK from what I've seen. Astonishingly so for part timers like her. The jobs are fairly portable as well. When she moved to Chicago, it took her no time to get a gig with another shop as she was going to school.
Some that I've been to, it's not that they aren't halfway intelligent, they simply have no attention span. I think they can handle a dishwasher.
Let me qualify though..I stopped going there decades ago and hit a 7-11 or RaceTrak instead.
Now, that said, in your normal restaurant, are sure Jose from Oaxaca or DeShawn didn't get busy and simply wiped down the cups and put them back? You sure he washed his hands?
Burnt coffee and bad service, I love it! Used to deliver products to them and developed an opinion: the workers are a bunch of no loads. Also remember a fast food incidence while patronizing them and going to use the restroom. The posted signs regarding employee's washing their hands. The door swung open and the employee was exiting while zipping up his pants then going directly into the kitchen area. Warm fuzzy feeling all over. The thought of them intentionally messing with the products coupled with genuine bad hygiene is kinda sorta a turn off to do business with fast food places.
Mike, I know. In the case I described though, no one had access to the brand new reusable cups. I didn't bring in a reusable cup, I was given a new one. That had never been used. And also a disposable cup because they were not smart enough to treat a brand new reusable cup that they alone had access too as if it were a ...unused disposable cup that only they had access too.
I understand the COVID protocols but they were not thinking in that case, which was the point of the example.

I'm sure these overpriced 'coffee' places are run quite well, but visit any restaurant kitchen and you'd be unlikely to ever return. Mouse droppings, roaches, out-of-date stuff, room-temperature foods which should be refrigerated, etc. And an almost complete lack of properly-understood hygiene. Wash hands? Only after dipping dirty fingers in sauces to check the seasoning.
The very few times I eat out, I expect to have a gut problem. And why spend money on coffees and food which are much cheaper to make at home?
Starbucks oscillates from quality to clown town. However the employees who are mostly college kids there for a time will not have any issue implementing procedures to keep cups clean.
Starbucks is very procedure driven. very.
Also a plus in their column, they refused to implement a vaccine mandate of any kind.
However I just don't care for their coffee. Dutch Brothers is far better. YMMV
Extra points for Dutch Bros. Their mostly high school/college employees are pretty well scrubbed looking and they always use disposable cups. In California, employers require a California Food Handler Card. It's not a lot but it is something.
