Sunday Music: Herb Alpert

Herb Alpert doesn't just make music, he is music.
He was the A in A&M Records.
He had Grammys and gold records aplenty, and was known for his instrumental hits by the barrel with the Tijuana Brass, when out of nowhere he did a very rare vocal, of the Burt Bacharach hit above, which upon release became his first piece to go to No. 1, in 1968.
Years later, on essentially a comeback album after a decade running his label, he racked up another No.1, this time an instrumental, Rise, making him the only person to hit No. 1 with both vocal and instrumental hits.

Now 84, he's still releasing albums.

Being a long time lover of harder edged rock, I would never want it to get out that I love Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass. Please keep my secret.............

Those with ties in the Spook community might recall that Albert's "The Lonely Bull" was the theme played by the USS Pueblo when she left port.

Rise was a great comeback. Fit perfectly into the 80's jazz I listened to at the time. I grew up with my folks playing TJB, loved it then and still do

Good taste. I like Herb Alpert as well. I especially like his "Blow Your Own Horn" album, which came out in 1983.

He also was instrumental with A&M at getting (along with other artists) Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 (formerly '65) into the mainstream. Catchy tunes, lovely women and a band tighter than a snare drum on Black Rifle Coffee. Great man; the term of 'body of work' applies.
