The Great Anniversary Festival

"[Independence Day] will be the most important [period of time] in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized by pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this forward forever more.

You will think me transported with enthusiasm but I am not. I am well aware of the toil and blood and treasure that it will cost us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these states. Yet through all the gloom I can see the rays of ravishing light and glory. I can se that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that posterity will triumph in that day's transaction, even though we should rue it, which I trust in God we shall not." - John Adams, July 1776, in a letter to his wife, Abigail

As SiG noted today, you can always go back to bitching and moaning about the problems tomorrow; they'll all still be here on the 5th.

Enjoy the holiday. And perhaps give at least a passing nod to "solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty". It surely couldn't hurt.

I was curious about your perspective on this: https://michael-hudson.com/2023/06/america-has-just-destroyed-a-great-empire/

During the siege of Malta, the Crusaders lost one of their 3 forts the day before the feast of Saint John the Baptist, and debated on whether to cancel the celebrations. Their commander decided that since they still held 2 forts, the festivities should proceed to thank God for still being alive. Needless to say, the Turks were shocked to see the Christians partying after the loss of a fort, especially one the Dirka Dirkas captured at a heavy cost.

We’re in similar straits now, and the ability to celebrate and not become monotonously angry and depressed is the same answer to the same problem. Happy 4th!

Amen and Ditto (To quote the Great Mahha Rushdie)
Agree with what you and SIG have said, let us rejoice in the Blessings that we have known, and not let our Mourning of Liberty Lost keep us from continuing the fight as every generation is called to do.

Perhaps it is Human nature to win, relax in Triumph over Evil, become complacent, feel entitled, and once again slip into bondage.

Be it by Evil men, Sin, or even the intoxicating drug known as Government.
We Know in every fiber of our being that we were Created in the image of God and bondage will never fit us and especially NOT our children.

I read an amazing article this am about a lesser known Founding Father and the admonition that what driver the human spirit is Greater than any Dictator, regulator, or Government.
God Bless us ALL and Please save our Nation, it is the only one we've got.

@Anon 4:39P,

I think it's full of more bullshit than I could fisk in a single sitting, and would probably require a detailed demolition over ten or twenty articles over a week's time. Which would accomplish nothing notable for anyone reading, because most people made up their minds on the subject a year ago, 95% based on no facts, logic, or common sense. For either side.

Change my mind.
