Few comedians get a hit series. Fewer still get two. Even less than that, the number who earn Emmy Awards for guesting on someone else's hit show. Find one who was married to the same woman for 60 years, and there's only TV and stand-up comedy legend Bob Newhart.
Passed in Los Angeles Thursday, aged 94, at home, widowed since last year, and after a 64-year career in show business. Which is easier to show, than to tell.
Thanks, Bob. For every glorious minute of it. We miss you already.
He used to joke that he had several shows..."The Bob Newhart Show", "Bob", and "Newhart"..and that if they gave him another show they'd have to just call it 'The Show" because theyd used all the other variations.
ReplyDeleteThis is Daryl. And this is my other brother Daryl.
ReplyDeleteFunny man. If I remember correctly, he and Don Rickles were good buddies in real life. Being around those two would have been really interesting.
Newhart had the deadpan face funny situations down pat.
Newhart was the first and as far as I know the only comedian to have a #1 hit record on Billboard 200. The album received a Grammy award in 1961. Quite a loss.
ReplyDeleteWe are the poorer for his passing.
ReplyDelete"...married to the same woman for 60 years..."
ReplyDeleteIn the world of entertainment, that alone is worthy of adoration. (I only know of three others: Bob Hope, Karl Malden, and Perry Como.)
RIP
And, it sounds like he was actually *nice*.
