No autotune, no digital loop-and-sample, no session musicians. Just hardball rock and roll. I feel so sorry for kids today, who have to idolize and settle for weak-ass wannabe second-rate musicians, because that's what 95% (or more) of the new crop of endless mediocrity are. Ann Wilson was 28 when she did this, and sister Nancy on guitar was 24. This performance is 44 years old, and they were crushing it.
I have always loved me some Heart... The music today is what you said, pure crap. The kids much like Vox the Pop have the audacity to denigrate and trash the music we grew up on. Our music was pure.
ReplyDeleteThere is a reason why Ann Wilson sang Stairway to Heaven at the Kennedy Center and not Taylor Swift or Miley Cyrus
ReplyDeleteAnd good looking. Been coming across quite a few MTV greats, music video's on these here innerwebz lately. Good times.
ReplyDeleteThe only other woman I ever fell in love with outside of my bride, Ann Wilson. 70 years old now and can still belt it out
ReplyDeleteAlso, 2021 saw the death of one of the best singers in popular music history, Jimmie Rodgers. Since his first hit in 1957, the million selling "Honeycomb" Jimmie became one of the best known entertainers ever, scoring 12 gold singles & 4 gold albums. His total record sales are 60 million worldwide. Jimmie could do it all, folk, pop, country & western & Celtic. He had his own TV show from 1959-61 & a summer replacement variety hour back in 1969. Starred in 2 movies & well over 200 TV appearances from 1957 thru the early 2000's and once was the guest host of the late night musical show, "The Midnight Special" back in 1973. An unfortunate accident in 1967 almost ended his career. At that time, he was making a comeback with a new record on the charts & more concert appearances. Overall, one of the best singers ever with absolutely no peers today. To see how popular he was & for that matter still is, checkout many of his recordings on youtube & read the comments.
ReplyDeleteSimply the BEST thing of that pathetic era was the music. Well, that and cowgirls ( only ones who'd give a jarhead a look much less anything else) in tight Wranglers.
ReplyDeleteBoat Guy
Good song, but I would rather have Nancy go Crazy On Me. Alone.
ReplyDeleteI've always loved a strong soprano paired with a powerful bass line. They were among the best. Grace Slick, back when she had a voice to sing with could do it. Even Linda Ronstadt at times. The Wilson gals towered over all others though. Thanks for the post.
ReplyDeleteHere's some current bands that aren't wimp rock, even though they are European.
ReplyDeleteNightwish
Therion
Epica
Within Temptation
Mono Inc
Sabaton
Having grown up in the 70s (and 80s, I had a wonderfully prolonged childhood), I really never thought I'd miss them. Yet another adolescent notion that time has proven to be incorrect. I miss Trans Ams, album-oriented radio, girls in tight shorts, cold beer at the lake and pretty much all the rest of it.
ReplyDeleteI don't think all modern music is crap, though. Kid Rock's "All Summer Long", at least to me, is a song that recalls this sort of thing with wistfulness for what we've given up as a society in the name of government-mandated, bubble wrapped, double-Karen approved safety.
I was 13 when that was recorded. My childhood crush.
ReplyDeleteGreat stuff. I hear they're even talking to each other again.
ReplyDeleteHey Mr. Aesop;
ReplyDeleteAll my best wishes & prayers to you & yours for a Happy New Year!
Sorry it's OT / unrelated to this post, but I know you have posted quite a bit about the Chad Reed / Kyle Carruth shooting event., and of course a lot of damn great information.
I really respect the Cates brothers (Brian & Duane) and found this piece quite interesting.
I was curious to get your thoughts on it, if you would be so inclined.
I know you get a million emails, so I'll understand if you don't reply, sir.

Again; all my best to you & yours; hope you had a very Merry Christmas + Happy New Year!

@Anon,
ReplyDeleteI don't think I mentioned it at all here, but probably commented elsewhere when it was mentioned.
The article you linked to seems to have covered it: Big criminal dumbass got hisself killed. End of story. His mouth was writing checks his ass couldn't cash, and turned out not to be bulletproof. Boo frickin' hoo. The video I saw pretty convincingly painted it as a community service homicide.
Dog and Butterfly was one of Heart's greatest albums, without a doubt.
ReplyDeleteAesop post if you see fit but I suspect you’ll appreciate this…two men we could all admire. Not directly related to Heart but hey why not enjoy a couple greats from the same period…who had our then future predicament pegged when dial tone still reigned
