I don't hate it per se. Everyone who was anyone cut a disco album back in the day. A lot of it was atrocious. But not all of it. What I hated was all-disco, all the time. That's a crime against humanity.
70s music was awesome. Just off the top of my head - Todd Rundgren’s “I saw the light,” Climax Blues Band’s “I love you,” Jim Croce’s “Bad Bad Leroy Brown,” Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition,” etc. etc. Nothing comes close - ever.
Could it be we are finally reaching the point where that music from the Disco era which had actual musical value is rising to the top and the drek is finally falling away?
Although often simplistic, I do find ABBA's harmonies still pleasing. And some of the Bee Gees work remains iconic in the sense that it is instantly recognizable and tied to the ear (musicality may be a little less determined).
Real Music not to be confused with todays trash.
ReplyDeleteWell, to be fair, if all they have heard of 70's music was from the late 70's Disco play list, it's easy to see why they came to that conclusion.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I fully embrace the fact that I hate disco.

Remember the song "Disco sucks, it won't last too long, it's big right now but it's gonna fade away... "
ReplyDeleteWell, it mostly did, although music to dance too is stronger than ever. If you can call it music. Or dancing.

I was there, and yes, it was terrible. The Era of Excrebable Taste poisoned every medium, music included.
ReplyDeleteIt does not mean there might not have been some hidden superlatives buried in the junk heap, and a real aficionado probably knows what they are.
But there are eras when art or drama or music explode around some centre of talent. And the 1970s is not it.

Amen. It had a tune, verses, and a chorus, things that no pop music song today has.
