Couldn't have happened to a more deserving bunch of @$$clowns:
According to the Washington Examiner, sales at Dick’s Sporting Goods dropped in the past three months amid backlash against tighter gun-sale restrictions following a mass killing early this year at a Florida high school. Revenue dipped 4.5 percent to $1.86 billion amid challenges in the company’s hunting business during the quarter through Nov. 3. Sales at stores open at least 12 months – a key metric for the retail industry – fell 6.1 percent compared to the prior year.IOW, that move cost them about $80M in the last 3 months.
The bigger pity is they haven't gone completely bankrupt. Yet.
We'll rethink that position when they lose another 10-20%, fire their CEO, and reverse their anti-gun position. Not before.
Best wishes with the Snowflake demographic, Dicks.
I've been watching the Hallmark channel on and off (don't judge me), and I noticed the sort of desperate sounding ads Dick's had on. "EVERYTHING 25% OFF! DOORBUSTERS 75% OFF!". When I see ads like that, I know someone's in trouble. I just chuckled.
ReplyDeleteThey decided to enter the political fray, now they pay. The fact that they're advertising om a family-friendly channel that's not afraid to mention "God" on their shows amused me also. Maybe they should have ported their ads over to MSNBC or something. (Maybe they did there too - I don't watch MSNBC.) But yes, the ads reeked of desperation - the announcer even was sort of shrill, like late night "As Seen On TV" sort of shrill.
Now the true test of whether values or sales are more important to a profit driven company. Place your bets!
ReplyDeleteThey began leaking money after Newtown when they made a bunch of virtue-signalling marketing/stocking decisions. They don't understand a part of their demographic any better than the Demokrats understood theirs in November 2016. How'd that work out?
ReplyDeleteYou know, when your attitude is your name...
Daily mail article yesterday said they were eliminating all hunting supplies entirely, in response to loss of sales.
ReplyDeleteSo sadz... I use to stop into Dick's at least once a month to see what was on sale. Then came to the realization, most stuff they have, even on sale, I could get cheaper other places (either brick & mortar or interwebz). Then their anti-gun stuff hit the fan, and I have said never again. Just this past week, had to buy some sporting goods for one of the chillins for their winter sport they play. I could've gone to Dick's, which had the products, or somewhere else. Somewhere else won, with a better price and free delivery...
ReplyDeleteSo sadz their virtue signaling sjw crap is starting to hurt them financially. So sadz.
My wife pointed out to me that Dick(head)'s had something I was interested in on sale. I thanked her and did not buy from them. Yeah, seeing them REALLY eat guano would be most satisfying. _revjen45
ReplyDeleteDick's problems are bigger than political. It's a dying brick-and-mortar retailer. For general-interest sports products, you can shop anywhere (mostly online). For sport-specific, equipment-intensive sports (ice hockey, lacrosse), you go to a speciality big-box store, or, if you have one, a really dedicated local shop. Otherwise, Dick's is a more expensive 99-Cent Store that happens to sell sneakers and basketballs.
ReplyDeleteI'm just waiting for the shareholder lawsuits and popping popcorn. Pass me a beer, will ya?
ReplyDeleteSince we all know brick and mortar stores are already in trouble, and they know it, you'd think they'd be smart enough not to pop off their mouths and piss off half of the population on either side. If you're not smart enough to zip your lips when you're trying to sell items to the public and you're already in trouble, then you deserve what happens to you.
ReplyDeleteNoticed Bass Pro bought Cabela's. So not only does Dick's have online stores to contend with, but now a HUGE competitor in brick and mortar. Yeah, they should have kept their mouths shut. They're not college students with free time or trying to run for office.

DeleteI don't know. It worked out all right for Chick-Fil-A. Maybe Dick's was counting on the counter protest dollars and the free publicity.
Dunno how easy it will be to fire the CEO, as he's family. So it all depends on how much of the Company is controlled by family shareholders.
ReplyDeleteSince brick-and-mortar remains the only place to purchase firearms (you HAVE to go through one even if you buy online), the CEO is manifestly stupid. Without the "MUST buy here" of firearms, he's just another Sears, Roebuck.
No you don't plenty of FFLs out there that will do a transfer for you that don't have a brick and mortar store... GunBroker has a list of them for your area...

ReplyDeleteThing is, you can't really order Chick-Fil-A online for 2 day delivery and have it be decent (or edible). Sporting goods, well. As an instance, for the family hockey gear I've always used Hockey Monkey, I don't use brick and mortar (limited selection). None of the hockey gear comes spoiled ;) I think eateries can get away with being more political because of that - they sell less durable stuff.
@Anonymous 12:18
ReplyDeleteI guess the better example would have been Nike.
Yeah, shoes are more durable than food (with the possible exception of Twinkies) ;)
ReplyDeleteNike did profit after they decided to be all PC, Levis is still doing well also from what I can tell (though I don't buy Levis because they're about as durable as tissue paper - I buy jeans for work, so Carharrt... bonus is they're made in the US.).
I think ALL brick and mortar stores that sell durable goods (with the exception of perhaps hardware stores) are in deep shit right now though. Now WalMart and Target (and all retailers) are saying that they'll be raising prices due to Trump's tariffs. WalMart can take the hit, Target I'm not sure, and Dick's? That'll be the last straw.
Come to think of it, Michaels and Hobby Lobby will live on though. Hobby Lobby is an example from the conservative side of things - they're still going strong. Crafters will craft, artists will paint, and they'll buy their stuff when it's on sale every single time and not care where. Crafting supplies are pricey.
Can anyone say Guitar Center? Surprised they still exist at all.
DeleteLike Insty says "get woke, go broke".
ReplyDeleteI do not darken the doorway of Dick's, in person or on line.
ReplyDeleteThey won't reverse that stance because the people who are in charge of determining their stance aren't going to have to make any lifestyle changes regardless of how the stores are doing. The board of directors are not going to have to stop stocking top shelf liquor at their homes. They're not going to suddenly have to stop ordering the best filet at the best steakhouses. They're not going to have to lay off their chauffeurs.
ReplyDeleteYou bring up some good points, Gray Man. Change requires incentive
DeleteThey appear unmotivated by their employee's suffering. Hopefully the good ones got jobs at Cabela's when Dick's first started dicking around.
DeleteYou'd think that they'd have taken the lesson learned by Kellogs during the 2016 election when Kellogs jumped into the political fray and had to close plants and distro centers.
ReplyDeleteNemo
Reverse their policy or not I'll never walk into a Dick's again.
ReplyDeletePhrasing.... :D
