FFS, Call A Cab

Some people are alive only because it' s illegal to kill them.

The longer I work the ER, the more I'm convinced that any DUI/DWI should be mandatorily charged as attempted murder, and any death resulting from a DUI should be mandatorily charged as first degree murder, with the most lenient sentence possible in either case being 50 years in prison, with the first possibility of parole after 49½ years served.

And before they get on the prison bus, the family(ies) of the victim(s) should get 5 minutes with a lead pipe and the culprit, alone, in a soundproof room.

One $20 Uber ride would have changed three lives last night. But Uber, like a parachute, only works when you use it.

  1. I'm hardcore on "The Rules of The Road" and motor vehicle laws, but I wouldn't go as far as you suggest.
One of the worst parts of holding drunk drivers responsible is the courts.
Personally, I couldn't afford the financial cost of a single DUI much less multiple.
I was in an early morning court session for a bond call and the judge literally said, "let's do the DUI's first to get the honest criminals out."
Yes, I absolutely want drunk drivers held accountable.
Yes, I also know that I don't see daily the victims that you do.

  2. Emphatically agree with sentiment, but suggest a response a bit more likely to pass legal muster. (Well, not actually, as the essence of the response gets categorically rejected because reasons, but...) Restitution.

Caught driving inebriated, lose car. Doesn't matter whose. Proceeds of car sale to fund for drunk drivers' victims.

Kill somebody while driving drunk, de facto and de jure evidence for death sentence. Forget prison at victim's family expense.

Nb: both of those points stand in stark contrast to groups like MADD.

  5. I don't trust God's wrath to inhibit drunk drivers.

  7. My cousin, Linda, one year almost to the day older, was traveling on her motorcycle with HER cousin, Karen to go to Karen's house and get dressed up for a double date. Linda was 17, Karen was 18. My uncle taught both of his kids to ride motorcycles. He raced them after WW2 professionally, took trips from Ohio to Florida and back. I know that Linda knew what she was doing. A drunk driver hit them going 100mph. Karen was killed and Linda came to with Karen's bodyless head on one side and her left leg on the other. It literally destroyed 2 lives although Linda lived until 46, when she was killed by another drunk driver. The state of Ohio let this yahoo have his license back after 5 years! In total, he killed 8 people before getting locked up. I have zero sympathy for anyone who drinks and drives. Take a GD cab/Uber/Lyft.

  8. Lost a HS friend who died wrapping his car around a tree while intoxicated. Since then I have never driven or been in a car when someone was drunk.

I have told many a person if you want to kill someone use a car not a gun. The laws on the books are too lenient since the presumption is that 'it was an accident'. Far from it. That does need to change.
