Sunday Music: Convoy

I've had this CB-cheesey one-hit novelty song from '75 kicking around my own Awesome Mix for a couple of years, and was wondering if I'd ever post it in this category, but damned if it isn't current events*, again, at least in Ottawagrad, and possibly soon to the District of Criminals, so I had it teed up to go up today since Tuesday. Rock on, Canadian truckers. Freedom, baby. "Cuz I didn't have a doggone dime."

  1. I was a Junior in HS when this song hit my home town. I and a co-host were doing a Saturday morning variety show at the local AM Radio station called High School Happenings. Sports, Chess club, Debate, whatever. And music. For a while this our number one most requested song.
    Good Times, Good Times.

  2. I feel I'd be remiss in my duties if I didn't reference Convoy to the beginnings of Mannheim Steamroller.

  3. Another great memory from '75 for me. Early 20's & just starting out in life!

  4. K-Tel Trucking Hits from the 1970’s. It was its own genre.

  5. C. W. McCall, AKA Chip McCall, founder of Mannheim Steamroller. NOT a surprise they opened for Mannheim...

    1. Nope. C,W. McCall's real name is Bill Fries. He was an advertiser turned country star. Trouble making a link on my phone but Google bill fries and you'll find the wiki.

  6. I have the whole album (around here somewhere with the rest of my Vinyl).

The adventures of CW McCall started with a local bread company commercial in Western Iowa, and became a series of commercials with the adventures of CW flirting with the waitress at one of the truck stops on his route.

  7. Technically not a “one hit wonder”. He also had “The Silverton”.

  8. Betting this one wasn't on the projected playlist . . . ;)

  9. Technically correct.
I burned through that pre-list a few months back. Now I just have another 40-50 songs on the Pending list, and I pick from them as the mood strikes, and add to it when something bubbles up.
As noted, this one was in the Awesome mix, but I never thought I'd have occasion to want to drag it over to Sunday Music picks. But everything comes around again, just like Mom's leftovers.

  10. @Wayne,

    Nope.
CW has zero other Top 40 hits.
    Convoy hit #19.
Pretty much the definition of a one-hit wonder.

  11. Not a bad movie either, one of Kris Kristofferson's better roles. Plus Ali McGraw was an absolute babe.

  13. The song & C W McCall, the CJ5, what a load of memories they bring back from the 70's. Mostly good while coping with the bad.

  14. I'm aware of his country songs, but Billboard still lists "Convoy" as his only song that charted in the Top 40 of the Hot 100. Mind you, it was simultaneously No. 1 on both the Hot 100 and Country singles weekly listings at the same time.
But overall, only Convoy made it to the yearly Top 40 list, at #19, as indicated.

    @Sentenza,
Better 60 years late, than never.

  15. Aesop: The Canadian truckers will hopefully cause some reappraisal of what TPTB is doing to their and our economy and lives. For places that demand a negative test, is that even possible after testing positive for having covid?

  16. I read elsewhere this AM that a US version is trying to get organized to go to DC. A real life version of the movie, here, is long overdue. 'Course knowing the fascists in DC, they'll probably shit their pants and order the NG to block the bridges with Abrams, without thinking about how that actually plays out. Then when food and fuel inside the beltway runs out in three days and the Amish get more feisty than they already are and the Swamp Rats can't commute back and forth to continue looting the country, think they'll get the message?

I'm sure Mayor Bowser, Pelosi and Buydem have a plan for that.
