The most entertaining sportsdope since Yogi Berra has finally been spiked into the end zone of life. Besides Madden's grieving family, this leaves comedian Frank Caliendo saddened, now without 25% of his material. Hopefully, he'll perform at Madden's memorial service.
According to Zerohedge he died "unexpectedly". An 85 year old obese guy dying is unexpected? I was mostly surprised he was still alive.
ReplyDeleteSaw that yesterday and yes Frank Caliendo would be a crescendo ending to the life of a great man and entertainer.
ReplyDeleteBet he winds up in the wuflu stats.
ReplyDeleteHe invented the "encircling" pen and the word, "boom". I also remember he did not ever ride on airplanes which further supports his superior intellect.
Probably would have been a good neighbor which is all anyone can ask for.
God bless all affected by this loss.
RIP, John

How long after the Booster was given was it before Coach expired?
ReplyDeleteWas always entertaining to hear him announcing games, back when I cared about the NFL.
ReplyDeleteNot to be disparaging of John Madden, as I always appreciated his enthusiasm for the game. But the much more significant death to me is Richard Marchinko (aka The Rogue Warrior). He died at the age of 81 on Christmas Day. He is now up guarding the Pearly Gates of Heaven.
ReplyDeleteMarcinko.
DeleteRichard Marcinko, Commander, USN (Ret.) .
Not a chance, kurt.
ReplyDeleteDemo Dick would be breaking into Hell, busting people out, and teabagging Satan.
I'm sure you're right about Demo Dick.
ReplyDeleteMadden is probably the only football name I know post middle school, when I stopped even pretending to follow or understand football. From what I remember, an entertaining fellow that truly loved the game.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, to a comment above - I bet he was a good neighbor, the kind that most of us would like to have.
Madden, another self promoting, self proclaimed, football coaching "genius", who retired from coaching after winning one, ONE, SB with an overall record of 76%. Genius? Hardly. The guy was an average coach by any standard of measurement. What he was a genius at was slinging BS, while sounding like the fourth wise man of football on TV.
ReplyDeleteDuring SB36 with the game tied and the Pats marching down the field, he's preaching that the Pats should be playing safe, go for the tie, and take their chances in OT. That's genius? Then the Pat's rubbed his nose in it by kicking the game winner as time expired.
He probably had a couple hundred thou on St. Louis.

Richard marcinko aka demo Dick aka sharkman was screwed bu the Navy.
ReplyDeleteJohn Madden was idolized by fans and players.
Would that it had been different.
Dicky Marcinko,
ReplyDeleteI read every book of his that I could get my hands on. He was, of course, full of shit, more so than a Christmas Turkey, but always fun to read.
