Big as a luau, with a talent to match, no way Iz was ever going to live to collect Social Security. But man, could this guy sing a song. And when you can start with an old standard that's been around for decades, take it over, update it, and own it this way, that takes something you'll seldom see in one lifetime.
Thanks for sharing. The first time I heard him sing my response was somewhat like Newman or Redford's line in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," "Who IS this guy!"
ReplyDeleteHe was a remarkable talent.
They used this version, that transitions into What a Wonderful life, in the end credits of Meet Joe Black. It's one of the saddest and yet beautiful things I've ever heard, and I want it played at my memorial service. I had to look it up to have the correct name and performer to list in my will, and learned about his life...

Truly a huge talent.

After the graveside service of a friend of mine, we met for refreshments and conversations with old friends at his daughter's house. I was bearing up pretty well until the video of this came on. Then the floodgates opened.
ReplyDeleteReally nice.
