Working On It...Sorta

Read my comment at the end of the previous post. I'd have cut and pasted it, but the pride of 2013 technology that is this back-from-the-grave zombie tablet doesn't do that.

I've got the week off, so among the eleventy things I have to do this week, getting this pig back up on skates is rising to the middle of my list.

Take care of yourselves, and be well.

  1. Running the new OS (Windoze?) installed as a virtual drive inside a Linux distro with the Windows data files physically segregated outside the combined system with backups elsewhere: the virtual OS if corrupted or disrupted can be restored with a few keystrokes, and likewise the data.

  2. "Ol Remus"
I missed this until this morning. Story doesn't say it I think but duck duck go'd Ol Remus and this showed up.

. Frankly My Dear: A Guest Post From Ol' Remus #patriot ...

I must read more of his back issues. Ol' Remus retiring from his Woodpile Report being reminds me of how similarly Boston T. Party (a.k.a. Kenneth Royce) over at Javelin Press stopped writing on libertarian conservative constitutionalist politics after his amazing, insightful, well resaeched, and sometimes shocking books One Nation Under ...

  3. Woodpiles side bars need to be saved as they are a short and to the point class on how the leftists fight and how to defeat them.

Sun Zhu said something about knowing your self and your enemies and you would be victorious.

  4. Half the reason this (and probably every) tablet blows: It won't log onto half of the sites on my own bloglist. This is why cellphones are for phone calls, and tablets should be yellow legal size paper.

  5. SOrry to hear you're still having issues. We'll be around and sad that Remus is done...

  6. Thanks for the info on "Woodpile Report".

  7. Paper is a proven technology.

  8. You've done this on a tablet. Okay, not that I wasn't suitably impressed before, but you must have the patience of a monk.

This is what has worked for me for years and years.
    Refurbished Panasonic Toughbook - $400 https://toughruggedlaptops.com/panasonic-toughbook-cf-52-toughbook-52.html?options=cart
Linux Mint 20 Operating System and all the useful software, browser, etc - $free

And you can drop it and spill s#!t on it and it still works. Try not to drive over it with your truck.

Alternatively you can probably get a new Samsung Galaxy at Costco for $200 or so...

  9. Someone kindly suggested Linux.
Here from Linux.org is a page with links to the download pages of a whole slew of distros.
And the classicDistrowatch is still with us!

  10. This Ubuntu-based distro was designed for Windoze users transitioning to Linux, to ease the transition:

    Linux Lite 5.0

  11. @Unknown 6:19PM,

Perhaps you could post such helpful hints using the same level of technology.

  12. I haven't turned on my Windows tower in ages, but of course do not run or maintain a blog. I use an iPad Mini 4 in an Otterbox case with two small clamps on each side of the Lightning power port to protect the plug and cable near the port from angular stresses. I keep it plugged in all the time to minimize charge-discharge cycles on the battery. Only things I know it won't do without paid services are torrents and faxes.

A generic Otterbox case can be had from EBay (probably made in the same Chinese factory as the brand-name one) for one-fifth of the price. The iPad opens all websites, blog pages, etc. and incoming and outgoing telophone calls are taken on the ipad from a nearby synched iPhone 6S. An inexpensive external bluetooth speaker improves sound, and an external keyboard is also an option: I got one but use the virtual on-screen one.

  13. Regarding the Woodpile Report.

I believe it is out of character for Remus to walk away without comment or a note on his blog. His wife recently died, and I have a feeling of dread for his well being.

  14. Ubuntu is the worst. I had flashbacks to Windows 8. I hated Windows 8.

Linux Mint, which was suggested elsewhere, is nice. Love it on my netbook!

  15. I tried a second post but it did not go up. My mistake I missed the 2015 date on that listing after the search so who knows. Hope he is resting and recuperating from his loss.

  16. Off topic. I have now seen three times now two comments on the interwebs and heard one from friend of a friend about people getting covid notification positive after skipping out on waiting in line. I am calling bullshit and this needs to stop as it adds to the misinformation. Also saw where the coin shortage will be solved in October as everyone is to take their change jars to the financial institutions and cash them in.
