Out And About

Yes, I stole this picture from Irish.

I'm interviewing properties for the future site of Camp Snoopy and the Castle Anthrax.

I won't be moving anytime soon, but buying in the near future, and working on it until I do, will mean the day I retire, everything's done and paid for, turn-key ready, so I pull up the drawbridge, close the perimeter access, and leave the "BFYTW!" Unwelcome Mat at the front gate, and the world can mind its own business, and I'll mind mine, until the day I die.

No, you don't get site pictures. Yet.
(I have several locations to look at, and I'll be taking a few hundred pics myself.)
Yes, it's still within the confines of Califrutopia.
(Yes, I've seen your state, for at least 36 values of that word, and some of them are pretty. None of them enough to make me want to move there. The devil you know, etc.)

But far from the madding crowds hereabouts.
Like firing-range-in-the-back-yard far away, as opposed to firing-range-on-the-surrounding-streets close.
And in regions of CA where getting a CCW is as hard as asking for one, rather than unobtanium. (Yes, that's actually over half the state, btw.)
And the last time they elected a Democommunist was...gee, never.
They're not hard to find in this state, once you head east of I-5.

If you need entertainment, head over to Feral Irishman's site, and scroll downwards through his blog list, or go over to the right on mine. I'm sure you'll find a few folks worth reading until I'm back in a day or two.

  2. Safe travels, good hunting, etc.

Wish I could convince the wife to do something similar. There's a town about an hour from where we live, and we're already "out" that is in the middle of BF nowhere. Would love to get something there.

  3. Addendum: I find it ironic.

I was born and grew up in America and have never known a true day of hardship or fear in my life. I'm the one who is prepping, buying, planning, etc. My wife grew up in the (now) former USSR. She described the fear of the secret police, watched a boy in her school get publicly whipped for speaking Kazakh (as the Russians were trying to stamp out the language)… during the breakup she described how, for months, they didn't know where their next meal was coming from. And she's tra-la-la skippy that nothing's going to happen here.

At least I've got the kids listening to me rather than her on most things - like "Does daddy have guns?" "No."

We're having to switch to the public schools. I just can't swing the private school any more, alas. Gonna be interesting when the older one, in a science class, comes out with "Climate change is stupid"! Or the younger one says "Boys can't marry boys, it's wrong".

  5. Aesop, so much beauty there. So many wonderful people. And so much idiocy.

  6. A favorite line from I don't remember where: "If you can't shoot skeet off your back porch without the cops showing up, you're not far enough out of town!"
Do it sooner than later Aesop. Those very annoying "limitations of age" show up in a lack of stamina and energy before you're ready.

  7. Amen to what Greg said... age sucks. Good luck with your search, there's still areas of the state that are "golden".

  8. @Nitzakhon: Stick your guns (figuratively & literally) and be there for your kids, no apologies, no abdication of your role in reminding the school that THEY do not own your kids. They have a hard time handling parental resolve in the public school sphere - just do your job as a Dad and things will be ok. Good luck, sir.

  9. God speed and make sure you pick a place where you can sink a viable well.

  10. @Nitzakhon: Are you sure you cannot convince your bride to homeschool your kids? I'd be happy to talk to her about it if you think it would help.

You do not have to go it alone anymore - there are good programs that can help.

  11. Aesop, I hope your road trip went well and I hope your readers enjoyed stopping by.
    Thanks for the shout out.

  12. @Badger:

I intend to not just be a VERY active parent at the school... but at the local school board. Heh heh.

@OGH: I work from home and - thank Hashem - my customer "only" cut my pay by a third (hopefully back to normal soon).

In the last couple of months of school *I* did all the school pushing - such as it was - while she "escaped reality" by watching lots of videos and napping. Rely on her to be an active teacher of our kids? HAH, not a chance.

And an observation that KILLED me this morning. The younger one (7) was doing nothing but watching the phone. I said, under my breath in the older one's hearing, "That kid's going to be a no-good lazy bum" to which the older said, very sarcastically, "Gee, I wonder where they learned that from?" Age 9, that one.

My wife? I love her. She IS intelligent. But between the depression and the character issues... *sigh*. The older one said, later, "I think you and mom will eventually get divorced".
