Many moons ago, back when I was a (very) amateur criminologist, I owned 10+ years of the FBI's uniform crime index reports. I did a correlation between the Brady bunch's grade of gun laws and the murder rate - not "gun murder rate" - but overall; same for violent crime, rape, etc.
In each case, there was - as anyone with three brain cells might suspect - a strong negative correlation between how "good" they thought the gun laws were, and the actual murder rate of the state. Not perfect, but IIRC the R^2 was statistically significant.
When everyone is armed people tend to simmer down a bit and have some respect. This is one thing I loved AZ for.. open carry as you wish (at least when I was there). They can keep that ridiculous heat and endless shades of brown coloring though. (Yes, I was in PHX and areas South).
Anyone want to venture a wild guess as to which political party controls the cities and states that are in that other half?
