Even if it was impossible to fire a federal employee, the State Department has soooo many "interesting" places to assign such an articulate and ambitious young man. Particularly in Africa or in places ending in "stan". Many positions aren't even based at the local embassy, so plenty of opportunity to sample local culture amongst the locals.
